1999 Small Boat Series

Valcour Sailing Club

John Trombley, Small Boat Coordinator

Welcome to the 1999 VSC Small Boat Program. This is our 4th successful year and we hope that it is our best ever. The Small Boat Series is intended to provide a competitive racing program for those sailors owning boats under 19 feet in length (monohulls and catamarans). The information provided here should answer all your questions relating to race dates, where to go, when to go, etc. Official Sailing Instructions will be handed out at the first race.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all of the small boat racers from last year as well as any newcomers to our program. The small boat series is a terrific way for beginners to learn racing for the first time. All of our sailors are very helpful to beginners with respect to boat maintenance, basic racing techniques, all around sailing skills, etc.... If you are interested don't be intimidated to give it a try.

Call John Trombley at 563-7128 to get more information. Or just follow the instructions below and show up at the Plattsburgh Marina beach with your boat by 8:30 a.m. on race day.

RACE SCHEDULE: (with OD assignment)

SB #1 Sun June 13 John Trombley

SB #2 Sat July 10 Don Duley

SB #3 Sun July 25 Ray Cash

SB #4 Sun August 8 Roland Sherman

SB #5 Sun August 15 Brian White

Boats should be rigged by 9:00 am.

Skippers meeting on beach at 9:30 am.

First race will start at 11:00 am.

A total of five races maximum will be run, time permitting.

Each race will be approximately one hour in length and will start about 5 minutes after the prior race ended.

No race will be started after 4:00 pm.

CLASSES: Open Dinghy and Open Catamaran.

COURSES: Olympic Triangle or Windward/Leeward.

SCORING: USSA Portsmouth Yardstick Handicapping System will be used.

The Low Point scoring system will be used:

0.75 points =1st place,

2 points = 2nd place,

3 points = 3rd place and so on.

Lowest combined point total wins the race day. The series will be scored for the racers best 4 events (i.e. one throwout).

AWARDS: Trophies will be awarded to the overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place

finishers.

ENTRY FEE: A one time fee of $25 for the season is required of each racer.

Full VSC members are still required to pay the fee. This helps to offset some of the series costs.

LAUNCH SITE: Plattsburgh Harbor Marina beach.

Crew Calling!

Scott Hecox has crewed for Dan Czaja, has sailed Sunfishes in the past, and wants to make himself available for expanded crew duty this season.

He’s in Plattsburgh, so give him a call at 563-5643. -Thanks, Scott!

"To win in anything, you have to be persistent and you have to be dedicated. You have to be hard working. I’ve never run into a guy who could win at the top level in anything today and didn’t have the right attitude, didn't give it everything he had , at least while he was doing it; wasn’t prepared and didn’t have the whole program worked out."

An Early Spring Greeting

-Ed Trombley, Commodore

We’ve been working on some revisions to our Sunday race series, and the Valcour Race as well. Some of the races have changed format and locations as well, your race committee chairman will detail these for you.All of the changes have been designed to bring better upwind legs and squarer courses, as well as a good mix of reaches and downwind legs. Also the length of courses on both Sundays and Wednesdays will be closely monitored to eliminate some of the extremely short races we’ve had in the past. Remember that time-on-time rating methods ( and we will continue their use for Wed.) depend on a race length of at least 1 hour.

It was decided to run the Valcour Race again this year for inclusion in the LCRC schedule

If anyone has any suggestion how this can become a race we can include in our own Sunday series, please let me know. We have not counted this race for the past few years, call me and I will explain why. Rene DuFort will be running the race this year ( thanks a billion)

Wednesday night races will start at 7:00 until August when they will change to 6:30 and then in September they will change to 6:00. Pay attention to this! I will try to let everyone know personally.

Please call me with any suggestions you have with anything we do.

Thanks, Ed

Here are some of the non-sailing events we’ve got planned for you sailors this year. The Spring Banquet will be held at Windows, and we’re looking at Friday evening May 21, details will be in the next newsletter, but then you guys know the procedure.

We’ll have a raft-up party after the Cracked Pot Race again this year. Something new: there is some discussion going on about having a little party/ get-together on the Juniper, perhaps between series I and II of the Wednesday night races.

As always I’m open to any suggestions

-Tammy

THIS DEAL IS WORTH A CLOSER LOOK...

"A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking big money."

- Everett M. Dirksen, Attributed

Everything is relative, and although ‘a billion here and there’ would do wonders for our club, your dues are all we really want. See text panel to right () We have new marks on the way and all the other usual expenses, so if you can, send along your dues as soon as you can, maybe even before the banquet.
